THE "Elementacular" Project

A big part of making Visual Effects is to re-create natural phenomenons like fire, water, smoke,
clouds - or to re-animate dynamic elements like cloth, muscles, hair and fracturing objects.

Cars blowing up, buildings crumpling down or a steady flyover a cloudy city, virtually
everything can be done in VFX. But it can be very time consuming and expensive to
create feature film quality Visual Effects.

The "Elementucular" Project is designed to make to concept of creating stunning
Visual Effects easier and faster. The goal is to make it easier for artists to create
photorealistic or artistic natural phenomenons for high-end film, commercials and games.

The project partners has undertaken the task of developing a software platform for
off the shelf CG applications using state-of-the-art technology in physical based simulation
and direct manipulation of physical objects - instead of parameter-based simulation that
is heavily used in the industry today.

The concept is largely based on AAA game engine technology in realtime, but with
feature film quality as the bar for the visual output. We call it "Environmental visual
effects through result-oriented design".

Developed in-house at Alexandra Instituttet in Aarhus, based on an idea by the three
initial partners: Alexandra, Javira and Sunday Studio. Our work consists of developing
new features, quality control and keep the project on track for usage in the VFX industry.

The project is funded by SharePlay and the project partners. The first phase (2013)
of the project is to create a proof-of-concept software platform for AutoDesk Maya.
Easy physical cloud creation in realtime is the first feature we are working on.
